What We're Learning: Debate

"Discussion is an exchange of knowledge; an argument an exchange of ignorance." -- Robert Quillen

Students in Landmark's debate class learn and practice the skills needed to have a productive discussion about many topics. They learn that just arguing won't get their point across. The A.R.E. helps them with this. A.R.E. stands for: Assertion, Reasoning, and Evidence. Students choose topics and research two sides of those topics. Then, right before they debate, they learn what side they will argue for. Students have learned about and debated everything from the opioid epidemic to having girls in the Boy Scouts.
