Students in Elinda Nedreberg's and Carly Hernandez's English classes are working on vocabulary building. They have been creating flash cards to study from. Research shows that strengthening vocabularies improves communication skills, builds insights and lines of reasoning, expands abstract thinking, and increases comprehension.
Landmark teachers are always working to help new students understand Landmark's culture and expectations. This year, we're taking most of the task on in our Advisory classes. Classes spend the first four sessions of each mini-term engaged in what we call Indragonation. Indragonation includes teaching students information about school policies, building team-work as Advisory classes, and school-wide activities like birthday donuts, picnics, or Advisory Competitions.
At the beginning of each school year, faculty from around the district come together to hear a positive, empowering message to kick off the new school year. This year's speaker and message was one of the best I've been to; which is really saying something. Author and speaker Kevin Brown shared with us the idea and message of putting forth a H.E.R.O.'s effort. A HERO:
This spring, our greenhouse program planted veggies. Landmark students, led by Greenhouse Specialist Mike Allen cultivated peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, onions, and much more. Summer school continued the efforts to make sure the plants thrived. This fall over 300 pounds of produce have been harvested so far. All of which were donated to Provo soup kitchens.
Landmark has 5 Vital Behaviors; Attendance, Productivity, Postitive Attitude, Cooperation, and Respect. These behaviors have been identified as crucial for student success; not only in achieving their school goals, but in all areas of life.

This week in Matt Cope's Biology class, students participated in a Concept Attainment activity. Concept Attainment is an inquiry learning strategy where students investigate group or category by comparing and contrasting samples.
Cope's lesson asked students to identify the traits and properties of macromolecules. This strategy helps students make connections between what they already know and what they will be learning.
